Happy 10th Anniversary SOCOM
This video is dedicated to Sony, and to the millions of gamers out there that made this franchise one of the greatest third person shooters of all time.
SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs was the cornerstone of PlayStation’s online network. Millions of gamers worldwide witnessed the birth of online shooters for the console and created lifelong bonds with their clans that thrive on to this day. We have seen developers try to tap into the magic that the PS2 SOCOMs created, and you can bet there will be more in the future that step up to the same plate. But no franchise will ever be able to carry the pride that the SOCOM legacy gave us.
As I edited this video, the emotions of my nostalgia felt like childhood memories relived. Looking back on a decade of this legacy and knowing that the old servers will close in a matter of days creates a sadness as if I am saying goodbye to a cherished friend. I have to remind myself that all of this is just a video game, and I often wonder how in the world some coding and a network can mean so much to me.
Then I am reminded of the lifelong friends I have met over the years while playing on the SOCOM servers. I remember the great memories of practicing with my team and competing for an intangible prize that meant more to me than any sports trophies or medals on my shelf. SOCOM will forever be “that game” that changed my hobby for good. It has forever raised the bar of expectations I have for any game I chose to play today.
This video is dedicated to Sony. The SOCOM legacy was once the most powerful TPS in gaming history. What happened? And what will you do about it’s future? If this franchise dies, or is shelved indefinitely, then that will entirely be your doing. There is a world full of classic fans waiting for it’s return, and an entire generation unaware of a masterpiece that shattered online records, and once held a throne in the gaming media headlines. We hope to see that glory return one day, and you will be hard-pressed to find a fanbase with more passion than ours…
