MAG 2 Poll Was Hacked

MAG 2 Poll Hacked

We ran a story earlier in the week highlighting the “amazing” results that the MAG 2 PlayStation.Blog.Share poll has received in recent months. There was quite a bit of criticism that emerged from both the MAG and SOCOM communities questioning the validity of the poll, and several forum discussions have ensued pointing out obvious red flags.

The number one concern was the shear number of votes received within such a small window of time. The MAG 2 poll was only at a few hundred last December, and it miraculously soared to the highest game-related request of all-time by March. The SOCOM community scoured Google’s SEO looking for promotions in English and non-English speaking countries looking for any type of community driven campaigns advertising the poll. Surely a popular YouTube video, forum post, or article could explain the surge in popularity. To our surprise, not much existed on the internet regarding promotions for the poll. And what we did find, barely broke a few thousand views. Surely there must be an explanation…

The second red flag was the low number of comments contained within the poll. The SOCOM II HD poll has received 15,382 total votes to date, which has generated 5,128 comments. The MAG 2 poll has received 28,122 total votes, and only generated 332 comments. Even the SOCOM 1 HD poll has more comments at 781, and it only has 3,063 total votes. As many SOCOM fans and even some MAG fans have pointed out, something just doesn’t add up here.

When an exploit of this nature happens, it usually doesn’t take long for someone to emerge to take credit, or someone who knows the guy , that knows the guy steps forward. When this story began to catch fire, there appeared to be one anonymous user that knew what was going on:

I personally wanted to believe that the results were real. Any gamer that is a product of Zipper Interactive’s IPs is desperate to prove they are more than a niche community with dying franchises. But it appears that the MAG 2 poll is too good to be true. Apparently, according to some MAG fans, there is an exploit within the script of the PlayStation.Blog.Share website. One or several diehard MAG fans have been meticulously juicing the poll the last few months. The poll continues to climb daily, and no one has heard any responses from PlayStation on the topic.

We should not bash the MAG community over the actions of a few. My only complaint was some of the MAG community touting that they had a bigger and more loyal following than the SOCOM fanbase. Ha! We applaud your confidence, and we appreciate loyalists of the former Zipper Interactive, but let’s not get too carried away now. The SOCOM franchise has sold over 15 million copies worldwide since 2002 compared to MAG’s 1.28M debut. I personally wish the MAG fans the best of luck on getting a sequel, but be careful trying to dethrone the most successful IP Zipper Interactive ever developed, and arguably the greatest TPS in the history of PlayStation exclusives. The SOCOM fanbase will be quick to call your bluff.
