PS4 boasts 50% more raw graphical power than XbOne

A new report published by Eurogamer has found that PlayStation 4 possesses 50 per cent more raw power in the graphical department than the newly-unveiled Xbox One.

The claims follow a comprehensive comparison of the PS4 and Xbox One’s GPUs, which found that Sony’s next-generation looks to be the more powerful machine in terms of visual prowess.

"We know that both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are based on Radeon GCN architecture and we also know that each compute unit is capable of 64 operations per clock," it reads.

"So, again through a process of extrapolation from the drip-feed of hard facts, the make-up of the One's GPU is confirmed - 12 compute units each capable of 64 ops/clock gives us the 768 total revealed by Microsoft and thus, by extension, the 1.2 teraflop graphics core.

"So that's another tick on the Durango leaked spec that has been transposed across to the final Xbox One architecture and the proof we need that PlayStation 4's 18 CU graphics core has 50 per cent more raw power than the GPU in the new Microsoft console."

The article goes on to offer an opinion as to why Microsoft’s machine fails to measure up to Sony’s new rig.

The Xbox One uses 8GB of DDR3 RAM due to the multitasking nature of its operating system. Due to the fact a “serious volume of next-gen DDR4” was unavailable, Microsoft had to create “complex architecture” to circumvent bottlenecks when moving data using DDR3.

By comparison, Sony did not focus its efforts on having a high level of RAM when initially developing PS4. This freed up more die-space that could result in future graphical improvements.

Sony was then able to upgrade to 8GB RAM closer to its announcement as a result of PS4’s more straightforward architecture.

PS4 is due out in holiday 2013, with Xbox One also htting stores later this year.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/22/x...-dont-know

Thank you IGN for compiling these. Its a one-stop place for Xbox One FAQs.

So for me, the two biggest issues are the 'you need to log on Xbox Live at least once every 24 hours' and the 'can't bring my game over a friends house and play on their name'.

Does it require an internet connection?
YES. Xbox One will need to connect to the internet frequently in order to let you play games, watch TV or do anything else. According to Microsoft's Phill Harrison it will need to do so approximately every 24 hours at least, more frequently for games and services that rely more heavily on the cloud. If you are somewhere without any Internet connection at all, such as a military base, you will NOT be able to use Xbox One.

It is reasonable to infer from this, and the other information Microsoft has provided regarding game-sharing, that Xbox One will need to connect to the Internet to authenticate you as well as connect to the Cloud. Games appear to be tied to your Xbox Live account, so without connecting to the Internet the Xbox One won't be able to verify that you own them.

Is it always-online?
Technically NO, but it depends on your definition of the phrase. You will be able to watch TV and Blu-Ray movies and play single-player games without being connected to the Internet at all times, but as outlined above, the console will need access to the Internet at least once a day. Microsoft's Harrison phrased it thus, speaking to Eurogamer: "Some bits of the system will work offline. I think the key point to make is that Xbox One requires an internet connection, but it does not need to be connected all the time. We think that most of the biggest games on Xbox One and most of the games and experiences and services you want to use will be internet-connected."

Can I play my friend's games on my console?
NO, not unless you're signed in as them. Otherwise you will have to pay, full-price, to access that game. The clearest stance on this comes from Eurogamer's interview with Harrison: "I can come to your house and I can put the disc into your machine and I can sign in as me and we can play the game. The bits are on your hard drive. At the end of the play session, when I take my disc home - or even if I leave it with you - if you want to continue to play that game [on your profile] then you have to pay for it. The bits are already on your hard drive, so it's just a question of going to our [online] store and buying the game, and then it's instantly available to play. The bits that are on the disc, I can give to anybody else, but if we both want to play it at the same time, we both have to own it. That's no different to how discs operate today."

Microsoft's Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb) put it this way: "Should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile." But then if you go home and leave the disc with your friend, they will have to pay for that game if they want to play it on their own profile.

What about members of my family on the same console?
YES. If a game is installed on a console, anybody who uses that console can play it through that console's parental controls. But what we don't know it how many accounts this will apply to: four? Five? Two?

Bottom line: you can only share games if your accounts are on the same console and parental controls are set up to do so.

Can it play pre-owned games?
YES, but we don't know how, and Microsoft isn't saying. It's likely to be based on a license system. The official Xbox One FAQ is brief on this issue: "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later." That has been echoed since by Harrison and Hyrb.

So you will be able to trade in games both at retail and through some kind of online service, but we're not likely to get the details on exactly how that works for some time yet.

What about game disc-rental services like Lovefilm and Gamefly?
That's obviously going to be affected, but we don't yet know how.

Does every game have to be installed?
YES. This is partly down to the speed of Blu-Ray drives. If you want to play a game, it will have to be installed on that system.

How big is the hard drive?
500GB, but you can't use all of it. Microsoft's official Xbox One information site contains a significant caveat in the small print: "Xbox One system software uses a significant amount of storage; less internal storage will be available to users."

Will it work without Kinect?
NO. Xbox's UK marketing director Harvey Eagle said at last night's Microsoft-hosted stream that Kinect requires to be attached to the console in all cases, and this has since been echoed elsewhere. "The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you," says Microsoft's Xbox One FAQ.

However, developers will not be mandated to use Kinect in every game, Phil Harisson clarified to Eurogamer. Another nugget of information: you also can't turn off Kinect's microphone, says hardware program manager John Link (via Polygon). It's always listening.

Will all that live TV stuff be available outside of the US at launch?
NO. At launch it will only work in the US, with a gradual global rollout planned.

How will Xbox One's live TV work with existing cable providers, like Sky?
DON'T KNOW. No Microsoft source has been clear on this - both Harrison and UK marketing director Harvey Eagle have stated that this will be revealed in due course. It's likely that all the requisite agreements are not in place yet. Xbox.com's own Xbox One information suggests that eventually it will work with any TV-viewing box via HDMI pass-thru: "Connect your cable or satellite box to your Xbox One and prepare for lift off."

Is it backwards compatible in any way?
NO. Not with any Xbox 360 games, digital or physical. "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective," according to Xbox Live vice president Marc Whitten.

Will my Xbox Live Gold account transfer?
YES, says the Xbox One FAQ: "You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One."

How about my Gamerscore?
YES, that's coming with you as well - along with your Avatar. "All of the gaming identity that you have on Xbox 360 will be there on Xbox One as well," said Harvey Eagle.

And my digital games library?
NO. You'll have to say goodbye to your Xbox Live Arcade purchases, as outlined by Eagle last night. But entertainment purchases WILL transfer over.

Will I still have to pay for Xbox Live Gold?
YES. The head of Xbox in Europe told The Metro: "Yes, we still see that as a chargeable service... I think that people understand that for a premium service that gives access to so many different rich parts of entertainment. Our consumers are happy and I think we represent great value there actually. If you look at the plethora of things available now through Xbox Live, particularly the Gold service and what we put behind Gold, we’ve got no plans to change that."

Mandatory game installation required for all games; second install on separate Live account sits behind paywall

Microsoft has confirmed that all Xbox One games will require mandatory installation onto the system's hard drive and, to install the same disc onto another user's drive, a fee must be paid.

Individual games will be tied to Xbox Live accounts, Microsoft said, meaning that the software giant can detect whether a game has been sold to a retailer and repurchased, or handed from one friend to another. In such instances, the second user must pay a fee.

"On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play," a Microsoft representative told Wired.

The company added that, once discs are installed on the hard drive, games can be played without a disc being in the tray.

The Wired article then elaborates: "What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner."

It added: "Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc."

Microsoft did not disclose what the second-user fee would amount too, and did not clarify further on the matter.

The article claims that there is no sweeping 'always-online' requirement for future Xbox One games.

Update: Jon Hicks, the editor of Official Xbox magazine, has claimed that pre-owned games will be un-installed from an owner's system and installed onto another. It is not clear if this process would negate a pre-owned fee.

I received one of those weekly PSN ads in my e-mail. Just for shits and giggles I decided to use the option at the bottom to "rate" the ad. I rated it poor which prompted a quick questionnaire on why I rated it that way. This was my response in the comment box to explain lol:

"As a Socom fan I blew 600 dollars on a PS 3 launch day to enjoy my favorite franchise. On top of waiting 2 years after the console was out to get a watered down Socom (Confrontation) with a bunch of disasterous changes and missing features, I then waited another three years to see them release Socom 4 which was a terrible attempt at a COD clone which offered no Socom gameplay at all. Sony has been told by the Socom fans to give us the Socom we've been asking for since Socom 2. They choose to ignore the fanbase and do what they want instead of what the consumer wants.

Until I see an ad that promises a true Socom game for the fanbase that got screwed over by the absolute dumbest decision makers in the industry, every ad Sony puts out is poor in my eyes. While I enjoy other franchises such as Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, God of War, etc. I have no interest in Sony ads or products anymore until they deliver on Socom. A true Socom I have to have, the others I can easily do without. A true Socom is a console seller for me, the other games are just things I would enhance my collection with but won't entice me to buy a console just to play them. Get back to me when Sony drops the arrogance and does something for the loyal fanbase they screwed over big time on the PS 3."

I know this stuff doesn't go to anyone of any importance within Sony but I just had fun with it.

Visceral Games PS4/Xbox 720 Shooter Outed

It seems that absolutely nothing can escape the internet eye of Superannuation, who is back yet again with a pair of interesting pieces of information, with the first focusing solely on Visceral Games, who have been busy lately with the Dead Space franchise and Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel.

On a resume for Jehan Choo, Concept Artist, he lists that he worked at Visceral Games on an “Upcoming next-gen shooter [PS4/Xbox 720]” from January 2013 – March 2013. Since January pre-dates the Star Wars deal, it looks as though Visceral has something else in the works, with Dead Space being a possible candidate as that was rumored to be receiving an FPS and Visceral was rumored to be working on the franchise.

Scrolling a little further down that resume, it reveals two unreleased PS3 and Xbox 360 projects, with the first being a “Stylized Army Game.” For that, Jehan created “concepts for a set of character races and the sub-classes within each class,” while also setting “the visual language of the weapons and how they could function.” The second was then an “Action Fantasy” title (Dante’s Inferno 2?) where Jehan did the “pre-visualization of an entire world of dark, fantastical creatures.”

Stepping aside from Visceral Games, that other tidbit involves a possible Medal of Honor on PlayStation Vita by Slant Six Games (Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, 2 SOCOM titles on PSP), which was revealed in a piece of art by Alex Carigi, Concept Artist at Slant Six:

With the Medal of Honor franchise ‘resting’ as of right now, it’s probably a safe bet that this isn’t in development, and possibly never got past the concept stage.
One thing that I was unaware of, was the fact that the controller has a touch pad on top ( the black space in the middle ). It took me a bit to figure it out and it was almost by accident. Nightstalker Terrorist first time I ever tried the M14 in Socom 2, ending up running through enemies left and right by running through the huts near the middle and making my way around to the sniper's rock and the middle. It was a full room and I was on a tear. By the end round count it said I had 8 kills for the previous round. My clanmate ended up shooting me the next round and told other people in the room to vote me out. I was pretty pissed, but it's a story I tell my socom friends.
